National Transfer Student Week at NIU

NIU proudly joined colleges and universities nationwide in celebrating National Transfer Student Week this October, a time dedicated to recognizing the unique experiences and contributions of transfer students. The week provided an important opportunity to strengthen connections with community college partners, celebrate transfer student success and reflect on how NIU can continue to enhance the transfer experience.

The Office of Community College Initiatives, Office of Orientation and First Year Programs and multiple campus partners coordinated the week’s events, focused on increasing visibility of resources and fostering a greater sense of belonging. This year’s efforts reached on-campus and off-campus audiences, reinforcing NIU’s commitment to supporting students throughout every step of their transfer journey.

The outreach extended to community college campuses, including Harper College and McHenry County College. NIU Days at these locations offered valuable opportunities for representatives from each NIU academic college, the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office, University Honors, Career Services, and cultural resource centers to meet students where they are and share the many pathways that lead to becoming a Huskie.

On campus, the week featured a series of events designed to celebrate and foster community among transfer students, including a trivia session hosted by the Huskie Academic Success Center at Founders Memorial Library. This event offered a lighthearted way to learn about NIU’s history, academic success tips and university resources.

Midweek, pride shined through portraits with transfer students and their community college pennants in the MLK Commons. The social event provided a space to make genuine friendships and for students to share stories about their paths to NIU.

Career Services hosted a professional development event that focused on career readiness and confidence-building. Students practiced elevator pitches, participated in mock interviews with employer partners and received personalized feedback on how to effectively communicate their strengths.

Senior kinesiology major Grace McMillan proudly shows her community college spirit, holding an Elgin Community College pennant. As a University Honors Fellow, McMillan helped spread the word about National Transfer Student Week and encouraged fellow Honors students to join the celebration.

Each encounter during the week provided valuable insight into what transfer students need and value most including authentic connection, practical guidance and visible recognition of their accomplishments. National Transfer Student Week reaffirmed NIU’s dedication to fostering an environment that elevates the experience of all students.
