“You’re going to find that not only is this course going to make you a better person, but it’s also going to make others around you that much better. I’m very thankful for Braven because of that.”
Will Thiel
Will Thiel is a fourth-year student at NIU majoring in marketing, with a minor in professional communication. Thiel completed the UNIV 301: Braven Leadership and Career Accelerator course and strongly recommends that fellow students do the same.
“In addition to getting to work on a project with a real company, UNIV 301 helps with holding each other accountable to become better people, building a resume, building cover letters, making you more noticeable online, and eventually getting into a job you want. Those were some of the coolest things about this career accelerator course,” Thiel said. “Aside from all of that, the life experience you gain from this course is truly beneficial.”
Students who enroll in UNIV 301 gain access to transformative benefits that set them up for long-term success. From personalized mentorship by industry-leading professionals to hands-on learning experiences, the course is designed to help Huskies develop critical competencies sought by employers. UNIV 301 is offered in online or hybrid synchronous course sections.

Thiel and his fellow students worked with United Airlines the semester he took UNIV 301, teaming up as a cohort to help build an app. Part of the coursework included creating and delivering presentations, and Thiel noted the public speaking skills taught and learned in this course are helpful for all students, regardless of major or potential career path.
“Even if you’re simply looking to build expertise in social communication or interpersonal relationships, this course is for you. UNIV 301 helps you become a better leader,” Thiel said. “What this course does differently than some is provide experiences from different avenues – it’s not just business or public speaking, it’s people from aerospace, Microsoft, Google, engineering and more. It’s a number of different communities that all have one simple goal in mind, and that is simply to make each other better.”
