NIU debuts Mission AI chatbot to provide support for students

Mission, a new service for NIU undergraduate students, combines artificial intelligence (AI) technology with research and tools to meet students where they are and increase persistence, engagement and success. The tools include AI assisted text messages to reach out to students and a chatbot to respond to student questions around the clock.

The SMS text messaging, powered by EdSights, will provide students with added support in a format they already use and are comfortable with, including regular check-ins in four key areas proven to drive success:

  • Academic Engagement
    • Examples: course engagement and self-efficacy
  • Financial Distress
    • Examples: balancing work and school and food insecurity
  • Wellness
    • Examples: emotional wellbeing and lifestyle
  • Engagement
    • Examples: belonging and support system

“Student success is a top priority at NIU and these new tools fit right in with that strategy,” Alicia Schatteman, vice provost for Academic Affairs, said. “Providing extra support to our students in a comfortable and convenient format will help keep them engaged and provide helpful resources and assistance where they may be needed.”

A welcome message will go out to all NIU undergraduate students Wednesday, Nov. 6. Mission will provide support for students in a conversational, empathetic tone through texting. Responses are saved and the AI tool learns each student’s patterns and preferences to provide personalized support. No logins or app downloads are required.

Additionally, students can receive timely, accurate responses to questions at all times of day and night, regardless of location via the Mission chatbot. This chatbot provides added benefits for adult and remote learners who may not be on campus or who have busy schedules outside of their studies. In addition, this can benefit first-generation students who may have many questions but also may be hesitant to ask them.
