NIU accelerates its expansion of opportunities for transfer students

Governor JB Pritzker has declared April 2025 as Illinois Community College Month. Northern Illinois University is celebrating by reaffirming its commitment to empowering community college students with accessible, high-quality educational pathways.

As a transfer-friendly institution, NIU is dedicated to fostering authentic relationships with its 32 community college partners, ensuring students have multiple routes leading them to earn their baccalaureate degrees and gain the skills needed to enter the workforce and launch successful careers.

Approximately half of NIU students have credits from other academic institutions, and the university saw a more than 10% increase in new transfer student enrollment in Fall 2024 compared to the previous year. A total of 1,462 students joined NIU from other colleges, a testament to the university’s dedication to providing clear and efficient pathways to degree completion.

Expanding access through place-based learning opportunities

NIU continues to prioritize innovative approaches to transfer pathways that make degree completion accessible, particularly for place-bound students. The university offers location-based programs at Elgin Community College, Rock Valley College, the University Center at Harper College, the University Center of Lake County and the University Center at McHenry County College.

These programs allow students to take NIU courses closer to home, providing a convenient and state-of-the-art learning environment that helps them balance their education with personal and professional commitments. Additionally, these partnerships further support the collective mission of addressing workforce needs, opening career pathways that enable local talent to remain in their communities and contribute to economic development.

“NIU is intentionally expanding transfer pathways to ensure place-bound students have accessible, high-quality options to complete their degrees without relocating. Through strategic partnerships with community colleges and university centers, we are creating innovative programs that support student success while addressing workforce needs and strengthening local economies,” Rodrigo López, NIU executive director of community college initiatives said.

Transfer partnerships prioritize career readiness

NIU is doubling down on its shared commitment to ensure educational pathways are designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to enter the workforce or elevate their careers. Most recently, NIU signed multiple agreements with community colleges that offer a seamless transfer into baccalaureate degree programs that build upon students’ educational and professional experiences.

These pathways not only acknowledge students’ professional experience but can provide them with credit that is applied to their degree at NIU by way of its credit for prior learning policy.

“At NIU, we recognize the value of students’ professional experience and are committed to ensuring it counts toward their academic goal or earning a bachelor’s degree. By awarding college credit for prior learning, we create more efficient pathways to degree completion, helping students advance their careers while saving time and money,” Laurie Elish-Piper, NIU executive vice president and provost said.

Looking ahead, NIU is finalizing a unique opportunity for Chicago Public Schools students to complete an associate in applied science degree, maximizing their credits earned at City Colleges of Chicago before they transfer to NIU to complete their baccalaureate degree. This partnership is being led by the Chicago Roadmap initiative, a partnership between City Colleges of Chicago and Chicago Public Schools.
