Showing appreciation for our academic advisors

To celebrate Advisor Appreciation Day and honor academic advisors at NIU, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost will be hosting a luncheon for advisors.

The event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, April 22 in Room 315 of Altgeld Hall. Mission III will be in attendance.

“Providing effective academic advising is critical to the success of our students,” said Laurie Elish-Piper, executive vice president and provost. “We look forward to celebrating the hard work and dedicated service of NIU’s academic advisors at this event.”

NIU has more than 75 professional advisors, dedicated to enhancing and supporting the success of students. NIU’s advisors utilize National Academic Advising Association professional standards and resources for providing the highest level of service.

Our academic advisors:

  • Develop personalized plans for students’ success while attending NIU and beyond.
  • Empower students to make informed decisions about their career path, major and course schedule based on skills, goals, interests and life plans.
  • Assist students who wish to change majors.
  • Help students who are undecided about a major find the programs best suited to their interests.
  • Connect students with resources and provide relevant information and support.
  • Work with students to explore career options and strengthen the skills needed to put their life plans into motion.

This year, NIU implemented changes in the advising structure to best serve students throughout their journey as Huskies. All first-year students now are assigned a first-year advisor; the majority of these are based in the Academic Advising Center.

This centralized advising model aligns with NIU’s Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Accountability Plan 2.0 to improve student success by providing a developmental, holistic and high-touch advising experience for all students that is consistent across all colleges.

“This new system provides students with a go-to source of information and makes the advising process more efficient,” said Alicia Schatteman, vice provost for Academic Affairs. “Our goal is to make sure students have the information and resources they need, along with support and guidance to succeed both here at NIU and after graduation.”
