The 2024 Conference on Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE) was a big success, featuring 172 presentations from 245 student presenters. The Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning hosted the event at the Duke Ellington Ballroom for the first time since 2019.
CURE provides NIU students with the opportunity to present faculty-mentored undergraduate research, artistry and engagement projects that they have completed during the academic year.
The number of presenters increased by 70% this year, partly due to a larger cohort from the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology participating in the event with senior design projects.
“Sharing the engineering experience with a diverse audience is critical to effective communication skills for our graduates,” Nicholas Pohlman, Presidential Teaching Professor and faculty advisor for Senior Mechanical Engineering Design said. “Displaying their work in a public venue is a course requirement and I’m thrilled that some students selected CURE as the activity to demonstrate both learning objectives and application of engineering principles to solve complex problems.”
Two judges reviewed each student project, and up to three projects were recognized per disciplinary category depending on the overall score.
