Student guide to artificial intelligence

As we gear up for the spring semester, the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) is excited to highlight a timely new resource designed to support student success in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

The Student Guide to Artificial Intelligence offers students a comprehensive introduction to the opportunities and challenges that AI brings — academically, professionally and ethically. This guide helps students understand not only what AI tools can do, but also how to use them responsibly and critically as part of their learning and future careers.

What’s Inside the Student Guide?

The guide walks learners through key concepts and practical skills that matter in today’s AI-infused world, including:

  • Foundational understanding of AI – what it is, how it works and why it matters
  • AI skills and tools – from prompts and research help to writing, creativity and data analysis
  • Ethical considerations – navigating AI with integrity and awareness
  • Academic integrity and classroom expectations – clarifying how AI should be used in coursework
  • Career planning for the AI age – helping students connect AI literacy with future opportunities

Also included are videos from NIU Libraries offering an interactive introduction to generative AI as well as a brief overview of generative AI and academic integrity.

Why This Matters for Your Students

AI tools from chatbots to sophisticated analytics platforms are already influencing how students study, research, collaborate and present their ideas. Equipping students to interact with these tools thoughtfully and ethically supports deeper learning and prepares them for the evolving expectations of employers and society.

Sharing this guide with your students sends a clear message: AI literacy is an essential skill for success in college and beyond.

How Faculty Can Use This Guide

  • Link to it in your syllabus as part of your course resources.
  • Recommend it during the first week of class to set shared expectations around responsible AI use.
  • Discuss parts of the guide in class or assignments to promote critical conversations about technology, ethics and learning.

CITL is here to help if you have questions about AI integration in your course or want support connecting this guide to your teaching goals.
