NIU strives to empower students through educational excellence. Our academic advisors are a key component, and with that in mind, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost has recently reestablished the Academic Advising Council at NIU.
“Advisors work directly with our students, gathering important feedback in the process. They are a great asset to students, providing them with information about degree programs, how to be successful and directing them to resources,” Executive Vice President and Provost Laurie Elish-Piper said. “As frontline student success team members at NIU, advisors truly improve the student experience. We are here to support our advisors, and this council will help utilize their insights to increase student success.”
The Academic Advising Council is designed to foster two-way communication between academic advisors and university administration, offer feedback on issues and needs of advisors, promote shared leadership, and increase training and professional development opportunities for advisors.
Building community and increasing communication is another goal behind reestablishing the council. Advisors will have the opportunity to collaborate, ask questions, provide comments and share success stories. Council membership will be comprised of staff members with academic advising responsibilities.
“At NIU we have first year advising through the Academic Advising Center, each college has academic advisors, plus we have faculty academic advisors and program advisors. This is a way to bring all our advisors together and gain valuable feedback that will maximize their efforts and benefit our students,” Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Alicia Schatteman said.
