NIU celebrates National Transfer Student Week

Transfer students are a vital part of the university community at NIU. National Transfer Student Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the many students who have found a home at NIU after beginning their academic journey elsewhere.

The week is also an opportunity to highlight dedicated faculty and staff who have success stories of their own as transfer students. NIU is home to numerous employees who once were transfer students and are now succeeding in their careers.

“My transfer journey taught me that there is no single ‘right’ path through higher education,” Tracy Ash, director of Pre-health Professions said. “Sometimes you change direction, take a different route, or simply figure things out as you go. Those experiences have stayed with me throughout my career in higher education and influence how I work with students today.”

“My transfer journey played a major role in shaping both my educational and professional path,” Ian Rabanal, employer engagement specialist said. “My experience as a transfer student has continued to influence my professional journey. As a former transfer student and now taking on professional roles, I had unique perspective on how important support and connection can be during a transition.”

By building stronger collaborations with community colleges, streamlining transfer processes, and increasing access to degree completion programs across the region, NIU is helping more students pursue a bachelor’s degree with greater flexibility and support, while removing barriers in the process. In addition, NIU was recently named to the 2026 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Transfer Honor Roll, recognizing an ongoing commitment to the success of transfer students.

NIU is hosting National Transfer Student Week events through Oct. 24, celebrating the many paths that make our university community stronger. Stop by some of these events and share your Huskie Pride.
