This semester, NIU is launching LeadNET: Department Leadership Network, a training and networking initiative designed to assist new and seasoned leaders at the department and school level. The program is designed to support department chairs and directors by fostering leadership development and collaboration through theme-based discussion. These sessions provide a platform for exploring current challenges, sharing best practices and engaging with subject matter experts to enhance strategic decision-making and academic leadership.
LeadNET is being led by Bárbara González and Pallavi Singh. The program aligns with NIU’s strategic theme and guiding principle of empowerment and shared responsibility, with a design to specifically support the development of leaders and replaces the Department Leader Development Program (DLDP).
DLDP was a strategic initiative designed to cultivate leadership capabilities across university departments. The program focused on empowering department chairs and school directors with the skills, mindset and tools needed to navigate complex challenges, drive innovation and foster a positive organizational culture within their respective units.
“I appreciated DLDP, as this program provided a community to connect with other fellow chairs,” Shondra Clay, chair, School of Interdisciplinary Health Professions said.
“The DLDP program provided valuable opportunities to learn about the resources and supports available on campus that are essential for department chairs to effectively carry out their roles and responsibilities,” Henna Muzaffar, interim chair, School of Health Studies said. “This knowledge has enabled me to better support my team by sharing relevant tools and information. The program facilitated meaningful interactions with chairs across campus, allowing me to learn from their experiences and gain insights into best practices and common challenges.”
LeadNET will continue to provide strategic leadership training to department leaders with enhanced flexibility and networking opportunities. Interactive online sessions will cover themes including change management and employee well-being. Furthermore, themed community-building events to be held once each semester will provide opportunities for networking in a relaxed, informal setting.
To provide comprehensive support for department leaders, a two-day immersive LeadNET orientation program is offered for newly appointed chairs and directors. This program introduces essential leadership tools, institutional resources and strategic guidance. In addition, a structured peer mentoring component pairs new leaders with experienced chairs and directors, fostering a supportive network for sharing insights, navigating challenges and promoting collaborative leadership development throughout the academic year.
“We are excited to launch LeadNET and look forward to providing opportunities for department and school leaders to grow and increase their leadership abilities, while working in community with their peers,” González said.
